Timeline

Centuries of history

14th century

The Kingdom of Kongo

At its height, the Kingdom of Kongo spanned a vast region of Central Africa. Organized, prosperous, master of trans-Saharan trade, it embodied an advanced African civilization long before colonization.

1880

Colonization & the Berlin Conference

The Republic of Congo became a French colony known as 'Middle Congo'. Natural resources , timber, rubber, minerals , attracted European powers, marking the beginning of intensive forest exploitation.

1960

Independence

On August 15, 1960, Congo gained independence. A new era opened, driven by the ambition to leverage the country's natural wealth not for exporters, but for the Congolese people.

1980–2000

Birth of Ecotourism

The creation of Odzala-Kokoua National Park (one of Africa's oldest) and other reserves laid the foundations for responsible tourism. Congo began to be recognized for its incomparable biodiversity.

2000–2015

Communities at the Heart of Tourism

Community tourism initiatives multiplied. Villagers became guides, rangers, direct actors in conservation. Tourism stopped being extraction and became co-construction with local populations.

Today

Congo on the World Stage

With over 65% of its territory covered by tropical forests, Congo is recognized as one of the planet's lungs. Ecotourism is booming, attracting researchers, adventurers and committed travelers from around the world.

Why Tourism is Vital for Congo

Beyond travel, it's a major economic, ecological and cultural lever.

Economic Engine

The tourism sector generates direct and indirect jobs in hospitality, transport, crafts and catering , contributing to the diversification of an economy long dependent on oil.

Forest Guardian

Every visitor entering a national park directly funds its protection. Ecotourism is one of the only economic mechanisms capable of making forests more valuable standing than cut.

Cultural Promotion

The traditions, languages, music and expertise of Congo's peoples , Aka, Teke, Vili, Lari , find in cultural tourism a vehicle for transmission and international recognition.

Education & Awareness

Tourism turns visitors into ambassadors. An immersive experience in Congo's forest leaves you changed , and potentially an advocate for preserving one of the last great intact ecosystems.
